9/12-9/16
This week was very influential to the future of my ISM year. Considering my research from the previous week in addition to my LinkedIn search for professionals, I discovered that I would not enjoy being in a solely finance based career because I feel that I need to utilize my creativity, a skill that is difficult to display in spreadsheets and financial statements. Trying to connect with professionals on LinkedIn was frustrating at times because I had found great people with positions that I admired; however, I could not view their profile because we did not have any connections. This process got easier as I connected with more and more people, but overall it was time consuming and difficult to filter my search for people when I did not know what I was looking for. When viewing the profiles of CFOs or financial advisors on LinkedIn, I wasn’t drawn to their daily tasks or special skills and felt that I would not fit in with the type of people that I was viewing. When discovering that I wanted to shift my topic of research, I took advantage of my annotated bibliography this week and learned more about both operations management and supply chain management. Both of these positions were similar in ways and I felt drawn to both of these career paths. In these positions, I can still use analytics to maximize efficiency, but instead of specifically money management, I would be analyzing all factors of the production like inventory, location, production, and product quality. I was very relieved to learn that the goal of supply chain management is to please the customer, meaning providing great customer service and making timely deliveries. I feel that I possess both the organizational and communication skills to fit either one of these positions and feel at peace with changing my topic of interest. This week, I also fixed minor problems on my resume and watched my peers’ videos on professional dress. I will need to prepare to start making calls to professionals next week to begin my interviews and start looking for a mentor. Although cold calling people terrifies me, I know that it will get easier with repetition. I need to be cognizant that even if these professionals are not what I’m looking for, they can recommend another professional that might be a better fit.
