Continuing from last week’s surface level research, I was able to analyze more scholarly articles in order to discover more about the career of a CFO and the goals of the corporate finance department as a whole. From this extensive research, I learned about the importance of maximizing free cash flows, examined an example of a balance sheet, and determined the different responsibilities of a CFO in both large and small corporations. Most of my sources came from beginner finance textbooks, which were very easy to follow and gave simple definitions to new terms. It was encouraging to see that these credible sources that are used in college curriculums are available, so I can start educating myself early on. From my research on the size of corporations and their effect on the role of the CFO, I found a preference for working at a larger corporation because they are most commonly the second leader in the strategic planning process after the CEO. This is appealing to me because I can be heavily involved in the big decisions and manage my own financial department. I also extended my knowledge about risk management and how to optimize “risk-return trade offs.” In addition to my research, I created a template for my resume. This being my resume, I used lots of resources to see how to format my resume and what to include. I had to be deliberate with which classes and experiences I included, making sure that most of them applied to finance or business. I have made it a goal for next week to perfect this resume and hopefully have a peer critique it. My favorite part of the week was developing a one minute video presentation about professional dress with a couple of my classmates. We were able to bring out our creativity and dramatize the importance of dressing professionally in an interview. I am very enthusiastic about showing this video to the rest of my peers because I think it will make a comical and effective statement.
